Zub Tales

After two years away from the big show, I’m back at San Diego Comic-Con, one of the world’s biggest and craziest pop culture experiences. I won’t be stationed at a particular booth or table this time so I’ll be wandering the floor and socializing, but there are a bunch of signings and panels lined up, so here’s where you’ll definitely be able to find me during SDCC:

THURSDAY JULY 18th:
10:15 – 11:00am SIGNING – IDW Publishing (BOOTH 2729)

11:30am – 12:30pm Licensed vs. Creator-Owned Comics – ROOM 8
Comics is a medium full of diverse content and voices working on both company-owned characters and franchises, as well as original creations from the creators themselves. So, what is the real difference for the people behind the stories we love to read? Oni editor-in-chief Sarah Gaydos leads a panel of accomplished comics creators who have worked in both fields to discuss their experiences, recommendations, and how to craft the best story either way.

3:00 – 4:00pm D&D: All Bards – Horton Grand Theater
Comic-Con special guest Sam Sykes (Seven Blades in Black) will DM a bunch of authors playing an hour-long D&D session where everyone is a Bard and combat isn’t allowed. The bold adventurers include Chuck Wendig (Wanderers), Paul Krueger (Steel Crow Saga), Pierce Brown (Dark Age), E. K. Johnston (Star Wars: Queen’s Shadow), and Jim Zub (Monsters & Creatures; Warriors & Weapons).

Oni Press, IDW, and Dungeons & Dragons are busting out the 20-sided die for a second roll at Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons II: Painscape this fall, and they’re giving Comic-Con attendees an exclusive sneak peek! The world’s greatest role-playing game returns to plague the world’s most dysfunctional animated family in the newly announced second series. Fan-favorite dice-dependent writer Jim Zub is joined by editor Chase Marotz, and Wizards of the Coast game designer Nathan Stewart for a full hour guaranteed to be more fun than any line for convention exclusives!

Ever wonder what goes into creating a new comic series and building worlds from nothing? From initial concepts to the creation of compelling characters and fantastical locales, the look and feel of sci-fi and fantasy comics requires lots of thought to make these incredible stories real. Now you too can learn the secrets of comics world building from this panel of comics luminaries and masters of the craft, including Marc Bernardin (Castle Rock), Jim Zub (Stone Star, Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons), Spike Trotman (Delver, Iron Circus Comics), Richard Starkings (Elephantmen), Ariela Kristantina (Wolverines, InSeXts), and Clive Hawken (Delver). 5:00 – 6:00pm Rolling the Dice: Where Comics and Role Playing Collide – ROOM 28DE
Role-playing games of all genres and types are making a strong comeback, but did you know some of your favorite comic creators not only play these games but also create and run them? This panel of secret and not-so-secret role-playing comics creators includes Kieron Gillen (DIE, The Wicked + The Divine), Jim Zub (Stone Star, Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons), Spike Trotman (Delver, Iron Circus Comics), and M. K. Reed (Delver), who will discuss the mind-bending intersection between creating comics, diving into the make-believe world of RPGs, and how one creative world influences the other.
